Air International reports that the RMAF will receive its first two EC-725 Super Cougar by January 2013. Aircrews and technicians which form the nucleus of the squadron (presumably No 10 Skn) are currently being trained in France on the new aircraft. Deliveries of 12 EC-725 ordered on April 2010 will continue through 2013 with the last order due to be delivered by early 2014. A simulator has also being ordered for the proposed EC-225/725 facility at Subang Airport.
The magazine said that the majority of the fleet will be based at Subang AFB while a two helicopter detachment will be based at Kuantan AFB. The squadron’s current base at Sg Besi AFB in Kuala Lumpur will be closed soon hence moving the squadron to Subang AFB where No 2 Skn is also based will allow a centralized VVIP/VIP movement operation as No 10 Skn is also designated as rotary wing squadron to transport VVIP/VIP with its fleet of 2 AS-61N and 2 S-70B Blackhawk helicopters.
Eurocopter Malaysia as well as BHIC’s MRO set up are also located within Subang Airport hence allowing the squadron to be close to its maintenance service provider.
