The RMN has established KD Sri Tawau since the 1960’s during the Indonesian Confrontation as part of the effort to boost security in this part of Sabah. During its initial establishment, the base was allocated with two Harbour Diesel Launch, Borneo 11 and Borneo 12 to counter the Indonesian KKO’s infiltration. Later on, other ships and boats were also deployed there such as RAAN HMAS Vendetta, RAN’s HMS Woolaston, HMS Lanton, RMN’s KD Petrel, KD Sri Kelantan, KD Rencong, KD Sri Sarawak and SDML 3507.(here, here, here and here)
Avro Shackleton MR.1 maritime patrol aircraft from RAF Labuan (now Labuan AFB) provides aerial coverage for these ships at that time.
